The communication, computing & entertainment devices we use are becoming increasingly mobile. A laptop is portable but not v ery - try operating it while standing or walking around. PDAs such as the Palm are very portable and useful for certain activities but on their small screens are unable to show a normal web site or show more than a few cells of a spreadsheet.
The Tablet PC balances mobility and functionality, it is able to run standard business applications, has a screen large enough to make them truly usable and is now available at a price equivalent to that of a laptop. In some instances it can be a person's sole machine replacing both their PC and laptop.
Few people think twice about carrying a cell phone around with them all day. Carrying a laptop around ready for use is not practical. Tablet PCs can operate stand alone, connected wirelessly to a LAN or using the phone system. They can be carried around from office to office, customer to customer, are always ready for use and have the ability to be used either with just a stylus or a cordless keyboard according to the circumstances
Connectivity to the web and company resources is possible with a Tablet PC in a variety of forms. These differ dramatically in availability, bandwidth and cost. Wireless connectivity cannot simply be assumed, applications need to be adapted with a view to maximising benefit and minimising cost.
Tablet PCs offer computing power pretty much everywhere. Freely moving around not only between locations but also within them. Tablets redefine our relationship with computers in the same way mobile phones have with telephones. They offer not only new opportunities but also force us to re-evaluate existing practices. Cypad focuses on assisting companies that need to meet the associated technical and commercial challenges.
